Carbon filtering: This technique is commonly used in home water filters. Charcoal, a form of carbon with a high surface area due to its mode of preparation, adsorbs many compounds, including some toxic compounds. The water is passed through activated charcoal to remove such contaminants. Granular charcoal filtering and sub-micron solid block carbon filtering are the two types of carbon filtering systems.

Granular charcoal is not very effective for removing contaminants such as mercury, volatile organic chemicals, asbestos, pesticides, disinfections byproduct (trihalomethanes), mtbe, pcbs etc. The sub-micron solid block carbon filter is the better system that removes all of the contaminants.

Home water filters drinking water sometimes also contains silver. These small amounts of silver ions can have a bactericidal effect.

Reverse osmosis: The reverse osmosis water system is the technique in which mechanical pressure is applied to an impure solution to force pure water through a semi-permeable membrane. The process is called reverse osmosis, and is theoretically the most thorough method of large-scale water purification.

Ion exchange: Most common ion exchange systems use a zeolite resin bed and simply replace unwanted Ca2+ and Mg2+ ions with benign (soap friendly) Na+ or K+ ions. This is the common water softener. A more rigorous type of ion exchange swaps H+ ions for unwanted cations and hydroxide (OH-) ions for unwanted anions. The result is H+ + OH- → H2O. This system is recharged with hydrochloric acid and sodium hydroxide, respectively. The result is essentially deionized water.

Electrodeionization: It includes passing the water through a positive electrode and a negative electrode. Ion selective membranes allow the positive ions to separate from the water toward the negative electrode and the negative ions toward the positive electrode. It results in high purity de-ionized water. The water is usually passed through a reverse osmosis unit first to remove nonionic organic contaminants.

Water conditioning: This is a method of reducing the effects of hard water. Hardness salts are deposited in water systems subject to heating because the decomposition of bicarbonate ions creates carbonate ions that crystallize out of the saturated solution of calcium or magnesium carbonate. Water with high concentrations of hardness salts can be treated with soda ash (Sodium carbonate) that precipitates out the excess salts, through the common ion effect, as calcium carbonate of very high purity. The precipitated calcium carbonate is traditionally sold to the manufacturers of toothpaste.

Plumbo-solvency reduction: In areas with naturally acidic waters of low conductivity (i.e. surface rainfall in upland mountains of igneous rocks), the water is capable of dissolving lead from any lead pipes that it is carried in. The addition of small quantities of phosphate ion and increasing the pH slightly both assist in greatly reducing plumbo-solvency by creating insoluble lead salts on the inner surfaces of the pipes.

Lead is another dangerous contaminant that is found in tap water. And it as has been stated there are no safe levels for consuming lead.

It can originate from somewhere between the water main in the street and the household faucet.

The EPA estimates that 98% of all homes have pipes, fixtures or solder joints in the household plumbing that can leach some level of lead into the tap water, an example of this is that all chrome-plated brass and brass plumbing fixtures contain 8% to 15% lead.

So what is an effective way to deal with such a localised contaminant? Drinking water filters fitted to the mains supply is one of the effective ways to deal with this.

But why should we be so worried?

The addition of chlorine to the water supply has been a long standing issue for debate since it was first introduced in the late 1800's as a means of disinfecting the water and killing any bacteria.

Recent studies have shown that According to the U.S. Council of Environmental Quality, "Cancer risk among people using chlorinated water is as much as 93% higher than among those whose water does not contain chlorine."

The reason for this well founded concern is that once chlorine is added to water there is a chemical process that takes place that forms trihalomethanes.

These are the chemical by products of mixing chlorine with other natural compounds. And these trihalomethanes trigger the production of free radicals which cause cellular damage that can lead to cancer and heart disease.

Because the body is made up of over 70% water, and every single cell transaction takes place in water - water is the single most important thing that we can take into our body.

It is a natural healer and avoiding dehydration is the natural preventer of many of our common illnesses including arthritis, asthma, hypertension, headaches and allergies, besides giving us fabulous skin and a healthy digestive system, to name but a few.

So the quality of the water that we consume is paramount to the health of our body.

We are told that we should look after our health and fitness levels and one of the best ways to achieve this is by using drinking water filters at home and increasing the amount of water that we consume on a daily basis.

How Safe Is Your Home's Well Water?

Some 43 million Americans rely on domestic water wells for drinking water, about 15 percent of the population. A long term study by the US Geologic Survey recently found contaminants in many wells. The study points to a need for everyone with water wells to test and filter their water, especially if wells are located near agricultural areas, mines, or homes with septic systems.

US Geologic Survey scientists tested water in 2100 private wells in 48 states from about half the nation's principal aquifers, or underground reservoirs of water. The study found that 23% of those wells had one or more contaminant above levels considered safe for human health by the Environmental Protection Agency.

Most of the contaminants found in groundwater wells were chemicals that come from the breakdown of rock underground. These include radon, arsenic, nitrates (probably from farm fertilizers), and flouride. Radioactive elements like radon, strontium, and uranium were found in less than 10% of wells, especially in areas where uranium exists underground.

Bacteria were found in about a third of the wells sampled including E-coli, a bacteria that indicates that human or animal sewage is probably mixing into the underground water. Septic systems can leach bacteria into well water as can large factory farms like dairies, hog raising farms, egg farms, and feedlots which all produce huge quantities of manure. To date the government has weak regulations for factory farm waste.

"The quality and safety of water from domestic wells are not regulated by the Safe Drinking Water Act or, in many cases, by state laws. Rather, individual homeowners are responsible for maintaining their domestic well systems and for any routine monitoring," said Leslie A. DeSimone of the National Ground Water Association.

Even the Safe Drinking Water Act, a law dating from the 1970s, does not regulate thousands of chemicals found in drinking water today. The USGS used the list of regulated chemicals from that law as a basis for this study so it may not have detected many possibly toxic chemicals.

Protecting Ourselves

The high cost and limits of city water has led to an increase in the purchase of water tanks to hold both rain water and trucked-in water. Some like the look of concrete, considering them to have an old look and can lend themselves to landscaping. However, due to their weight they typically need large machinery to set them and or qualified help to build them on site. Cost can be high. A 10,500 tank built on site starts at about $9,000.00.

Polyethylene water storage tanks are the most economical tanks for water storage up to around 50,000 gallons. Plastic potable water tanks are light weight, strong durable, easy to work with and easy to install. These tanks are rotationally molded, meaning that they have no seams to leak. They re impact resistant and can literally be rolled into place. They need no special bedding or foundation and are typically set on a bed of sand or pavement. Dark green and black poly tanks are specifically made for storing water only with their dark color inhibiting algae growth. These tanks have UV inhibitors added to the tanks' polyethylene giving them a typical lifetime 15 years or more.
